How many knockbacks do you have to take while modelling???? One day you have everything going - lots of shoots, you feel positive and then the next nothing. We just have to believe and keep on going.....

I had the belief I could do modelling, even with a bit of eczema, some people told me that it wouldn't be a problem because photos can be edited but then one day I asked for advice from the owner of a model help group and they said it would be a problem, models had to be perfect they basically said, it kind of set me back and I lost some confidence but it's rubbish, I shouldn't let them drag me down and I am going to continue to put myself out there to get modelling work

In the end i think this comes down to how much you enjoy it. If you are doing modelling (or in my case photography) cos you love doing it then it doesnt matter what you look like. If you are doing it for a living then maybe the circumstances are different. I think everyone, whether they are model or tog, gets let down at some point. Some more than others. I had i think 6 booked in one week, all TF, and i did none of them. 2 cancelled and 4 were no contact. If i was making a living out of this i would seriously be worried but as its a hobby i was cheesed off but got on with it.

Dont give up if its something you enjoy cos then the idiots have won.

I think that if a model wants plenty of work then there are two things needed.
1. Be 100% reliable or at least keep the photographer informed if there are any problems.
2. Advertise!  Put requests for work up on the forums or reply to castings.
There are so many models signed up on here that are not active.
I have been looking for local models.  I messaged about a dozen and only two have read the messages and none have replied.  I checked their portfolios and on a couple they joined in March/April 2010 and the last access on the site was July 2010. Do they think they will be in instant success or do they just give up.
It makes one wonder just how serious they really are and whether the site should remove entries that have been inactive for a year.

Well I am serious about modelling and I do hope to do it for a living, that's why I am requesting to join agencies aswel as just networking social sites like this one.

You know what is annoying about trying to get work from sites like this? The only thing that photographers are willing to do a paid shoot for is nude or glamour, for heaven's sake I am just starting out doing modelling and I shouldn't be asked to go into stripping naked straight away like this! will I get no work at all if I won't do nudes? It's ridiculous!
Is that all I'm freaking good for? will togs think I am useless and inflexable if I refuse to do nude shoots? I shouldn't think so, I am supposed to be in for whatever I am comfortable with...

Hi LRW - All I can say is good luck....
I think you look OK, but as an ex-model agent (licenced in the 'good old days') I'm afraid I would not have added you to my books at only 5'2"!

I'm sorry to say I don't think you will ever earn money through modelling & would suggest another career - but please feel free to prove me wrong!

I closed my agency following deregulation & all the 'scam-merchants' moved into the business who'll promise you the earth & charge you the earth!

Unfortunately i think glamour - which I'm not a fan of - (or artists modelling of course!) is probably the only way you'd get paid for modelling.

Sorry to be so blunt, and I don't want to kill your dream, but I think it had to be said.

Totally agree with your reply there Martin.  I would have said exactly the same but I wanted someone else to say it before me.  As for paying models, Yes I will only pay those girls that do take their clothes off.  I think they deserve payment if they are prepared to strip in front of a stranger.  They have also proved to me that they are the most reliable of girls to work with.  Fashion Models on these sites are two a penny and my past experience of them tells me they are not worth time or money investing in.

Whilst I would agree with some of the points made in the previous two responses, I would say that while 5'2" will not get you on to the agencies books for catwalk/runway modeling there are many other forms of modeling where you may get work.   If you have fabulous thick hair and a face with good bone structure then there are models required for promotions of hair products, make-up etc.   Good hand shape and well manicured nails could get you work in skin and nail products.  For the body parts business height generally doesn't matter.
Another thing which I see as a disappointing trend is for aspiring models to cover themselves in tattoos and piercings.   Many agencies simply will not take on models who have visible tattoos that cannot be easily covered by makeup.  The same goes for piercings. Single earring piercings are generally acceptable, belly button piercing may be OK as are nipple piercings as long as the jewellery can be removed when necessary.
Multiple ear piercings, nose and lips are generally not acceptable and many commercial photographers will not take models that have them.
For a good model who is seriously trying, I will pay for a model's time.  I generally don't shoot nudes or art nudes but if I did I would expect to pay more.  If a model is prepared to work for pictures, CD, Shoes or whatever then that is their choice.  I believe in the Christian ethic of "A labourer is worthy of their hire."

Well thanks for that, you're basically saying I'm only good for showing off my breasts and vagina?
That is so typical, I think that shoots with clothes on are so much more creative and interesting, to be quite frank, I am not here for perverts to oggle over, I must say it's rather insulting of that guy with a guitar photo especially, the way he worded it..

I am a classy lady and I will keep my dignity plus mystery to myself, surely it is very boring having seen all of the model at once, showing flesh but covering private areas such as breast and pubic area is much more enticing and fun, leaving more to the imagination is what men REALLY want

If someone were to pay me a large sum then perhaps I would consider taking off my clothes for a shoot as long as it is tastefully done.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against glamour and nude but trying to get a newby to show it all off first hand? I find this wrong.

Stick to your guns mate !

You shouldn't be persuaded to do anything that you don't want to do.

It has to be said you have a very distinctive look.

I can see you in period dress as a pageboy or as Oliver Twist but with very feminine make-up; that'd be cool !

And as for your size - as they say, good things come in small packages.

Lady Rose.  I haven't even asked you to take your clothes off have I?  In your own words you describe yourself as a newby yet you want payment.  The only girls I have paid were professional models who did take their clothes off and it wasn't for my own fullfillment I can assure you.  I guess you think that all photographers who take pictures of naked girls are perverts do you?  Well I can tell you that there is a lot of money in it.  That's why they do it.

Don't worry hun, your not the only one in that situation!!

I've worked my arse off to get to where i am now, even pushed my levels to their max and i still get no offers :(  I've always mention in my posts I am very happy to travel, and my rates are rediculously high....and I have other skills too which would save the photographer money!

It is very disheartening, but im still trying!  So don't give up trying yourself hun...

Of course, if a model gets his/her kit off, you can be sure that they are not a male masquerading as a female or vice versa!

I think the problem that you are experiencing Racheal, is this flippin' recession we are in.  I'm hoping to move out to Essex soon to get away from this ****e hole called London where everything costs so much.  I would be more than happy to pay you for a shoot. £180 for three hours work including your travel expenses?  I'll contact you through your website rather than this amateur website.  The code word is Arriflex!

Try to make sure you get on here more frequently.
- Check your emails
- Comments
- Posted castings (and apply for them)

I find that a lot of the search results bring back the same profiles.

And those profiles haven't been accessed in some time or are not the right type of model that I'm looking for.

In some cases a person wanting to hire a model is looking for three things when the view a portfolio on here.

1) Good skin - with not too much make-up
2) A head shoot with good lighting. And a body shot in the same context.
3) A will to work, a good biography, and pick the best of your recent credits (2011/2010).

I never said that all photographers who do nude photo shoots were perverts, I said that most of the people who view them all over the internet or in magazines are because they are usually dirty old men or horny young boys ogling them actually, once again, I have little problem with nude and glamour but it's not for me, OK?

And I know you haven't told me personally to take my clothes off, but the way you talk sends out the message and gives the assumption that you think all we short girls are good for is taking our clothes off, so you are referring to me in a way.

I'll have you know that nobody can possibly tell whether someone is tall or not in a magazine because we can wear high heels and the photographer can angle the camera in such a way it gives the appearance that you are taller, so yes, there are plenty of areas for us shorties in modelling, as long as I look good it shouldn't matter now should it?

Thank you for your support and your first comment back, I'm glad you agree with me and most women would too!

but are you telling me that you think I am a male masquerading as female?

I'm not sure who that last comment was aimed at

Hardly !

You're a little darling !

But I've seen a couple of models (on NM I think) who I'm damned if I could tell, without reading their notes, what sex they are.

And I know I can sound flippant but I really do believe that there is simply no need to push levels.

There are models of all shapes and sizes that offer all levels; so all a tog needs to do is cast appropriately.

You will, of course, have noticed that most togs are male and most of their ports (including mine) depict attractive young females.

Regarding size, I'm no Goliath (5'6" tall ................ ) a little man with a BIG personality! I'll probably not make a basket-ball player but I'm a pretty good horse-rider. So, if you pardon the pun, it's horses for courses.

A former client of mine was petite and she used to get work "modelling" with products such as e.g. shampoo because she made the product look bigger. (Thank you God for stopping me from mentioning "that" joke !)

I'm truly sorry that you are not local; you sound interesting and I'm certain that personality shines through in images.

That's sweet!

And in regards to your later/first reply to me about my dressing as Oliver twist, I've been told that before you know, what a coincidence!
I actually have an outfit like that, I could model in it next time I have another photo session with my photographer!

I bet you'd love to do it but you don't live local do you?
