Hello NP

The home page had a large update today, here is a break down of it:

Our forums are generally kept on topic and professional, as such we don't tend to gain the off topic 'scandalous' threads that get very busy found elsewhere. We have always believed this site was about quality and not quantity with our forums.

However the issue we have encountered with the above is that though a lot of activity is going on throughout the site it is not realised as many people use the forum activity as a guide on how busy a site is.

To account for this the home page has been adjusted to highlight such activity.

  • New Activity Feed - This feed is refreshed every 15 minutes with the recent activity across the site to help you find members you may not have known existed and get those using the site regularly much bigger exposure.
  •
  • New Images This Week Feed - This feed, also refreshed every 15 minutes will bring back a list of all the home page quality images uploaded in the past week. So if you missed a great image that was uploaded you will now get another chance to see it. Again this will add to the exposure of such images and members.
  •
  • Shout outs - We have moved these to the right as this is a very popular part of the site yet was at the bottom. As such it has been made more prominent and an extra shout slot added to the home page
  •
  • Recent Rated Images - This now has 6 slots compared to the old 5 and is laid out in a grid
  •
  • Castings - Castings again being a popular area have been given more priority and placed just under the forum recent posts.
  •
  • Platinum Featured - As castings gets a high hit rate we have placed the Platinum featured members profile next to these to ensure you continue to get great exposure from the homepage at Platinum Level.
  •
  • New Mail Layout - Mail is now laid out with a default image thumb displayed alongside the members name to make them easier to remember and the mailbox easier to view.
This was a large update and will be tweaked as required over the week as we gain data from the release. Please send us by email any feedback, ideas or views on these changes. It is all greatly appreciated.

The window containing 'Today's Activity' &  'New Images This Week' cuts off the bottom images - looks as if it should have a scroll bar.

Hi,

Thankyou for the feedback, it is a news ticker so is showing the top one and moving the others up. The 'cut' effect is just part of how the news scroll works to show the next in line about to become the main feature.

Member Image I think we need to run with it for a week or two then see how it settles down. Initial thoughts are that it looks a little too "busy" but I do like certain new aspects so I'll give it a chance.

Oh I do go on don't I!

It's not too bad.  The only annoying bit to me is the constant changing of the "Todays Activity"  It's like watching a neon sign advertising in Piccadily circus.  As someone else suggested maybe a scrollbar.

It is a very big change which is 100% effective at being unpopular in the short term but we hope as the benefits of this new layout become clear this will subside. We completely understand it will take some getting used to.

We will monitor this thread and all feedback, suggestions and so forth over the next few days as more members log in and get a chance to see it to give their view.

We'll then use the feedback to tweak and improve it as required.

Please do keep feedback constructive, if you don't like it please say why and if you do like it please also say why, the more detailed the feedback we get the better we can make our response and tweaks.

We've just tweaked the speed of the news feed to be a delay of double what it was, please refresh the home page to see this in action. This should be easier on the eye.

Member Image Yep much better.  I'm falling in love with it now, and I like the shouts on the right hand side.  Come on folks it ain't/won't be as bad as David Camerons "CHANGE"

Like others have said I to think it looks too busy. I feel more could have been made of the empty space down each side of the page. I'm veiwing it on a 22inch screen and have at least 3 inches of dead space either side which could be used, maybe not all but some of it to unclutter the site
Any one else agree?

I agree, I too am using a 24" screen and it is a little blob in the middle with too much scrolling required

Thank you for the feedback.

The monitor size isn't the issue, it is the resolution you run your system at. We as webmasters track the resolutions used by our visitors and have to create the site to be best viewed by the most used resolutions. We work at a resolution that has a few inches gap either side ourselves, however more than 85% of our users use resolutions below this. When viewed on the lower resolutions which you are welcome to do on your own machines you will see that the side gap no longer appears and at the most commonly used resolution there is no gap at all.

Due to this reason we cannot use the left and right padding areas.

I am sure you did at lot of research and had good intentions for the changes but I much preferred the old layout. When I joined N-P one of the things I loved about it was it's simplicity i.e. it showed me straight away what I most wanted to see and if I wanted more information it was dead easy to find it. I am not interested in who or how many people are sending messages or rating someone else's image. I'm not even sure I want them to know what I am doing. You don't have to tell me who has shouted I can see it for myself in the shout box. We all like to have are images on view as much as possible but do you think the new images of the week thing works? I don't. Might look better if it was only one image at a time not one and a half. How about removing the activity bit and just having a larger this weeks images area. I can't speak for the others but from the amount of negative feedback in the shout box I don't think I'm alone. Slowing it down has helped as it was giving me a headache when I logged on earlier. It dose look better on a full sized monitor then on my laptop. Like I said i am sure you had good reasons for doing what you did but please don't spoil what has been my favorite site out of the four I use.
I will look forward to your adjustments in the hope I will still be able to think of N-P as the most user friendly site available.

Hello Steve

Thank you for taking the time to write us a response.

An opt in/opt out option is possible as is a on/off option for the news feeds if this is an information overload. These are both features we have had planned before the launch in anticipation of such a response. Would these be favourible for you? It would allow members such as yourself who do not like the changes to essentially remove them from your view but allow others that like them to keep them. We have to keep in mind that so far the number of negative responses has been limited to less than 5 members on a site that hosts over 15k members.

We are giving the new adjustments a week to settle in to allow all time to take it in and try it before any further tweaks but will certainly be taking your opinion and others on board.

Again thank you for taking the time to give such detailed feedback it is very helpful in helping us make decisions to improve the site.

I like the concept, but I have problems with it

Each time I visit, I only get the new images and new members bit of the page, I have tried refresh with F5 and get no different, if I press crtl F5 then it takes about 2 to 3 mins to load the page, way to long for me, and I get bored waiting It is also exactly the same when navigating around the site via the home page.

Please bring back the old page, I cannot live with this, and will use what is possibly the best site for models and photographers less due to this

Just another little bit from me.  I have to agree with Steve on the issue of why do we need to know who has used the massaging service  - sorry the messaging service, Member Image   or who has just shouted.  It's like me telling everyone, hey I'm just going to the toilet Member Image   Also since I last commented on this thread last night, I have had real bad problems getting the site to load up.  It was taking a good minute last night at which point I gave up.  It does seem better this morning however, but I seriously would question the activity box as being pointless.

In addition to what Steve wrote,  I like the layout on home page and in particular the latest forum postings.  I always look at this first.  I don't know what else you could put in place of the activity box but whatever it is please make sure it isn't an animated Flash movie.  I get so fed up with visiting sites that have animated Flash content that constantly bombards the viewer with adverts that Mozilla have kindly provided its users with a Flash Blocker.  Best add on that anyone could have produced. My first thoughts.

The 'Todays activity' section is pretty pointless as it is, it has to have a scrolling bar at least as at the moment I can see four and a half activities, three are the fact that someone has used the messaging service (of no use at all to me, unless the messages are for me, in which case surely I'll be told anyway), and one that tells me that Brian Allman has removed a picture! As it doesn't show me what picture that was I can't see the point. Oh one has just come up saying someone has 'shouted', as this is on my screen about six inches away from the shout itself why bother.

The problem with this Activity section is that it is in the 'prime spot' on the front page, it dominates, and at the moment it looks a mess, plus the idea really only works when you are sitting all day staring at the front page.

Also am I alone in thinking the shout section is the most pointless stupid part of the whole site, I've never seen anything even vaguely sensible on it it's permanently full of puerile childish junk.

"Evening all!!!!!!!! I love cold roast potatos ummmmmm ummmmmm delish

"LONDON tomorrow whoop whoop (tee hee)"

These are examples of what up at the moment, anyone care to explain why these are of any use to anyone?

If these two sections  have to be kept  at least stick them down at the bottom where I don't have to look at them.

Tony

I agree things can look different in a few days so I am willing give it a try. As far as only five negatives I would imagine there are a lot out there ( like myself normally ) who won't bother to give you feed back but will just migrate to which ever site best suits them. I am not saying I or others won't use N-P but I can see me using it a lot less and in a very different way. Maybe others feel the same.
An on / off option sounds reasonable but what would you replace it with when I select off? I will never agree it is necessary to have it but at least I wouldn't have to look at it.
I believe it would be better if you moved Forums etc up and put the new section at the bottom of the page.
As others have commented already Flash has it's place but keeping it clean and simple in my book is better.
I am trying to remain positive here and I do appreciate you can't design a site around a hand full of people but your help and understanding means a lot to your dedicated uses I am sure.
