Hi Will,

Which film camera do you use? I got a Pentax 67 and Hasselblad 501CM I just love those. I only need some models for build up my portfolio with film cameras. :)
I think sometimes you can get better details with medium format film than with DSLR.

I'm in uni at the moment so I use the camera's that available to me.  Mainly Hasselblad503 and Mamiya RB67.  I tend to find most models don't have the patience to wait for a photographer to work on Medium Format (short attention span and all that,LOL)  I'll be honest, for work that I feel passionate about (my personal projects), work that I want that authentic look.  I use film.  I much prefer the look that you get from it.
For me film is just better.  I'm about to start working large format.  Even longer way to work.  But more control.
Do you shoot slides with your Hasselblad?  If so which slide film do you prefer?

I agree with your feelings about the film using.

Yes, I use slides too, but I don`t have too much experience with Hasselblad and slides because usually I use B&W film and I develop at home for myself (cheaper and good fun).

I like Kodak E100VS it has a similar colors and contrast like Velvia 50. I used 2 weeks ago a roll of Kodak E200 (you can push it up to 800ASA!!) and I got a nice details on it but this was expiret at 2004. See the photos below.

My favorite slide is the Provia 100/400 the sharpest ever I used before with my Pentax 67 it is just awesome.

I got some rolls of Kodak Ektachrome 64 too but I have not used yet.

Maybe I'm trying to be controversial, but I don't think so.

I keep reading about how film is sooooo much better than digital, then i look at the pictures on offer and think but they are just ordinary, nothing special. Are you sure that it's not just the process that you're in love with?

I obviously have more experience with film than anyone on here, yet apart from a very few instances, I cannot think of any reason to prefer it.

Why do you prefer it? is it just that it's fun?

Tony

I hope in the analysis you've taken into account the cost of computers, storage, monitors ect ect updates on the hardware to keep up with technology.
You'd buy a 4x5 and keep it for yrs, today we seem to have to buy a new camera every year or so it seems.

There are still some photographers who use film one such photographer ranks as the highest paid and recognised within advertising.
Reason there are certain things he can do with film that cannot be done using digital.

My own experience 4x5-10x8 probably loaded 1,000 of sheet. Also most roll formats.

Good afternoon everyone,
Let me firstly thank Tony for his contribution to our conversation.  It is valid to get other opinions added into the mix.
For me the transfer to digital has greatly reduced one of the things that makes photography so great.  The printed image.  And everything that goes with that.  For me an image living in the virtual world is not real until printed.
Also I feel that the interaction with the way we capture images on digital is very different.  I also like not having to rely on a complicated camera and the need for electricity.
In terms of quality I think colours are rendered differently on film.  Gain adds to images, noise detracts from images.  Which I will admit digital cameras now are alot better at handling.  However this leads me to my next point.
Chris raised the issue of constant technological advances, in relation to media, storage and all the other trimmings to do with digital imaging.  I'm sure that we have all at some point needed to do an upgrade of some sort, before the time that we were ready to do it.
And finally, YES it is more fun!

Have a Fuji GX680 in the loft. 6 x 8 m/m format. (9 photographs per 120 film)

Body, 120 back, 135m/m lens, 250m/m lens, 2 batteries, charger, extension to rails and case to carry it all in.

Anyone interested in buying this?

Terry.

I spoke to a guy who is using 127 format. Very rare and has managed to find film for the camera.
