I've been a fairly infrequent user of this site for a while - mainly bcause it appeared to have little or no activity across it.

Just recently I've seen a decent increase in traffic/posts/threads etc, so I've started logging in more frequently.

One question from a newbie - the front page layout seems to have changed, and now takes an age to load - previously things generally flowed left to right across the page, now they seem to be north/south and load up quite mechanically.

Other sites allow me to tailor the screen layout, but I can't seem to find any similar options here - am I being dim and mssing something?

No youre not being dim at all.  There has been a recent update which in my opinon isnt great and several others seems to agree.  SO may want to make a posy here:

Thanks for the response (and confirmation!), posty will be added shortly, cos the new layout actually disuades me from using the site as it takes so long to refresh.....
