Hi,
I have always loved BW but trying to get the right colours is proving to be somewhat annoying.
Of course there is the usual one push solution or some other simple button but these are too flat for my liking.
Does anyone have any advice or some assistance to offer.
Many thanks,
Simon...
Preferred system - Lightroom 2.3

You may have heard of Jeff Ascough, he is one several pro Photographers to be given "Ambassador" status by Canon.
He has various actions for sale on his site. I haven't tried them myself yet but from what I have seen they look good.
Go to http://www.jeffascough.net/pickpic/shop/addproduct.php?=7&productselect=5
and see for yourself
I hope this helps

Go to the layers tab in Photoshop click on the create new adjustment layer-at the bottom of the tab(looks like a half moon tilted slightly)-choose channel mixer from the menu-then tick the monochrome box (bottom left corner on the pop-up box)-adjust sliders to taste (just like multigrade- ) Have fun Neil

Not familiar with Lightroom I use Photoshop CS3 but what i do...
Before converting to Black and White I tend to tweak the image to get a contrasty feel to it. After converting to Black and White I go to selective colour in the adjustments panel. In selective colour I play with the black slider for black, white and neutral till i get the desired result.
Cheers

P.S - I'm waffling again aren't I

I would agree with Neil and big Nigel, I also tweak in color before I convert to B/W. Lee Collie.

Thanks,
Applying contrast first seams the best way ahead. I am going to have to mess around a little until I find something I like.
I kind of like this approach changing the base image prior to desaturation.

yeah like others have said, just tweaking with the photo first and then converting to B W. after converting to B W i suggest using the curves option to play around with the B W tones..works better than just increasing and decreasing brightness and contrast.

I sometimes use Adobe RAW; play with the curves and RBG.

Hi Simon, Below is a link to showing you Lightroom adjustments, take note of the point slider in the video as I use this not only on B&W but also colour adjustments. I also like to play around with the saturation slider in the basics panel of LR2. Enjoy.
